Two of the best boxing films ever made to be screened at a special Bristol location

Celebrate two of cinema’s greatest-ever boxing depictions with the Bristol Film Festival at Clifton Observatory this Spring.

 

Both Rocky (1976) and Raging Bull (1981) will be screened at Clifton Observatory on Sunday 7 April 2024.

 

Join the beloved local site-specific film festival for a relaxed Sunday double bill of two Oscar winners, namely Sylvester Stallone’s career-launching bildungsroman Rocky and Martin Scorsese’s critically acclaimed fourth collaboration with Robert DeNiro, Raging Bull.

Screening at 5 PM is John G. Avildsen’s Rocky, which won three Oscars including Best Picture and has since become a true pop culture sensation and multi-film franchise. It follows Rocky Balboa, a small-time boxer who is given the opportunity to change his life forever with a match with the world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed.

 

Then, at 8 PM, it’ll be time for the Oscar-winning biopic Raging Bull, often cited as a career-high collaboration between Scorsese and DeNiro as well as one of the greatest films of all time. Based on Jake LaMotta’s controversial memoir of the same name, we follow the rise and fall of the notorious boxing champion – both inside the ring and out.

 

Launching in 2015, the Bristol Film Festival provides an alternative experience for cinema lovers as well as celebrating the rich cultural landscape of Bristol. The concept is simple: to bring classic films back to the big screen in some of the city’s most iconic locations, from the Bristol Museum to the Redcliffe Caves.
