A musical adaptation of The Lightning Thief, the first in the best-selling Percy Jackson & The Olympians series, is coming to Bristol next weekend.

It’s a great day for fans of Greek mythology, musicals, and young-adult novels alike; The Lightning Thief, a musical adaptation of the first in one of the best-selling series of all time, is coming to the Cube Microplex next weekend, the 29th-30th of March.

The Lightning Thief is the story of Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old boy who discovers he’s a demigod and goes on a quest to find Zeus' missing lightning bolt – and prevent a war between the Greek gods.

While the book series is one of the best-selling of all time, and you may be aware of the two reviled films and better-received 2023 Disney+ adaptation, not many have heard of the quite critically-acclaimed musical of the first book.

Indeed, Frank Scheck for The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the musical version was “far more enjoyable than the misbegotten 2010 film version or its 2013 sequel”. That critical reception also included Time Out’s Raven Snook, who described the musical as “worthy of the gods”.

The musical, which premiered in 2014 in New York City, and was later updated and expanded in 2017, is now coming to Bristol! The Lightning Thief will receive its Bristol premiere at the Cube Microplex on Friday 29 March, continuing for a matinee show on Saturday 30 March, with shows at 14:30 and 19:30 respectively.

If you’re a parent with a child who loves mythology, this is the perfect show; fun, educational, and with some surprisingly deep and meaningful ethical and personal lessons along the way. That said, this is a show sure to appeal to people of all ages, especially seeing as the original novel was released in 2005.

If you want to see The Lightning Thief on Friday 29 March, or either of the Saturday 30 March matinee shows, head to the Cube's website.
