Multi-award-winning production of An Inspector Calls is coming to Bristol

Stephen Daldry’s celebrated National Theatre production of the classic thriller by JB Priestley is back on tour after a record-breaking, sell-out run of dates in 2022.

 

An Inspector Calls will run at The Bristol Hippodrome from Tuesday 8 until Saturday 12 October 2024.

 

This autumn, South-West theatre fans will have the chance to catch a production that has been hailed as the theatrical event of its generation; winning 19 major awards and thrilling more than 5 million theatregoers worldwide, An Inspector Calls is not to be missed when it comes to Bristol’s largest theatre.

Stephen Daldry’s acclaimed production highlights the enduring relevance and urgency of JB Priestley’s brilliantly constructed masterpiece powerfully dramatizes the dangers of the cruelty, complacency and hypocrisy of casual capitalism.

 

An Inspector Calls was written by Priestley at the end of the Second World War and set in the build-up to the first. The story opens when the mysterious Inspector Goole calls unexpectedly at the family home of the prosperous Birling family.

 

With this intrusion, the Birling’s peaceful family dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. The inspector’s startling revelations shake the foundations of their lives and challenge even us as the audience to examine our consciences. More relevant to this generation than ever, this is a must-see play.

 

Now known the world over as one of Britain’s leading theatre and film directors, Stephen Daldry has received Academy Award nominations for films The Reader, The Hours, Billy Elliot and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Amongst a plethora of West End triumphs, his multi-award-winning Billy Elliot ran at the Victoria Palace for an incredible 11 years.

 

Daldry’s landmark production also features ingenious design from Ian MacNeil, music by Oscar-winning composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare In Love) and atmospheric lighting by Rick Fisher.
