Bristol introduces brand new Cargo Bike Scheme for businesses

Posted on: 26 Feb 2024

Cycle your way to a more sustainable future, Bristol Cargo Bikes for Businesses will offer local businesses an environmentally friendly solution to freight delivery.

Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District (BID) and Redcliffe and Temple BID have this month launched a Cargo Bike Scheme with the aim of encouraging businesses to explore sustainable freight options to receive and distribute goods from Bristol City Centre.

Find out more about the scheme below…

This brand-new programme will provide subsidies to businesses that make the switch to cargo bikes to deliver freight, whether it be outbound cargo for coffee shops delivering external catering, or inbound freight for office blocks receiving goods like toiletries, catering, tea or coffee.

Since Bristol Bridge closed to traffic in summer 2020 and the Clean Air Zone was introduced in November 2022, the City Centre has seen a reduction in vehicles, helping to reduce road danger and improving air quality in Bristol. Now, the introduction of the Bristol Cargo Bikes for Businesses scheme will help businesses contribute to a more sustainable future.

Businesses will be offered guidance by both BIDs on how they can adopt sustainable practices for receiving and distributing goods. Replicating similar successful programmes, the project is jointly funded by Bristol City Centre BID, Redcliffe & Temple BID, and Bristol City Council.

Speaking about the programme, Tom Swithinbank (Project Manager for Public Realm and Sustainability at Bristol City Centre BID and Redcliffe & Temple BID) said:

“Bristol Cargo Bikes for Businesses is an opportunity for us to provide a really user-friendly solution to sustainable transport for cargo. This service is available to our business community across all sectors in Bristol, helping to make our city a greener, more sustainable place for all.”
