Posted on: 20 Feb 2024

Circomedia, a local centre for contemporary circus & physical theatre, are having their 30-year anniversary this March – and they’re celebrating it with a very special event.

Circomedia are a veteran enclave of Bristolian culture, and a symbol of Bristol’s creative, cabaret spirit. Based in St Paul’s out of the gorgeous and striking St Paul’s Church in Portland Square, Circomedia live up to their surroundings as a piously devoted centre for all of physical performance.

Now, Circomedia are celebrating an impressive 30 years of operation with an exciting events programme – culminating in a very special fundraising gala, raising money to ensure another 30 grand years of operations.

The Spring Gala, set to take place on Saturday March 23, promises an evening of ‘mesmerising’ entertainment, including cabaret-style circus performances, as well as world-class musicians and a ‘money can’t buy’ auction of unique experiences.

Attendees, who are invited to ‘dress to impress’ for this classy evening of circus entertainment, will immediately be able to engage with walkabout circus acts as they arrive, before settling down for the evening proper.

Headlining the evening and scoring acts will be R&B/soul legend Ruby Turner MBE, joined by Jethro Tull’s John O’ Hara on the keys – and the acts will be compèred by award-winning juggler Rod Laver.

Attendees will be treated to performances including an exciting aerial hoop piece by hypnotising aerial duo Jalina, high-octane acrobatics with Fingers Crossed Circus and delightful hat juggling from Charlie Brown – as well as circus and dance performances from the academy's current students.

Finally, the event will also feature an extraordinary auction from East Bristol Auctions, featuring unique experience prizes ranging from an exclusive day-for-two on set for the filming of Channel 5’s ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ as personal guests of the show director, to four tickets to Mama Mia at The Novello Theatre on the West End as guests of the show’s acclaimed writer Catherine Johnson.

This is a special event, with funds going to keep an important part of Bristol’s cultural fabric thriving. As Rod Laver, Juggler and Circomedia’s Higher Education Course Leader, said: “We can’t think of a better way to celebrate our 30th anniversary than by raising funds to support and nurture the next generation of circus students and artists.”

Circomedia’s Spring Gala will take place from 7pm on Saturday 23rd March. Tickets for the event can be found on Circomedia’s website
