I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue is THE most listened-to comedy programme on UK radio, regularly attracting an audience of around 2.5 million, an astonishing figure that would put it comfortably into the top 10 programmes on BBC 2.
The programme was devised by Graeme Garden in 1972 as an alternative to I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again, the chaotic sketch show featuring the likes of John Cleese, Graeme Garden, Bill Oddie, and Tim Brooke-Taylor that ran between 1964 and 1973. This new show devised a way of turning ISIRTA into a game, which meant not needing to write a weekly script.
Jazz legend Humphrey Lyttelton was the surprise first chairman with the pilot show proving a nerve-wrecking experience due to the lack of a script. However, Radio 4 commissioned a series, and the first show was aired in April ’72 with the aforementioned cast. Sell joined the show 2 years later, discovering that accompanying tone-def guests was part of the joke.
The show quickly became one of BBC Radio’s most popular creations, captivating audiences all over the country. After 37 years as the programme’s chair, Humphrey Lyttelton passed away in 2008. A devastating loss to those working on the show and its fans, after consideration, due to the overwhelming response, it was decided that the show must go on.
Since then, the show’s regulars have continued their good work (although in recent times Graeme has cut down his appearances) with chairman duties in the safe hands of British comedy legend Jack Dee.
