World Homeless Day: TAP for Bristol to provide funding for Caring in Bristol’s Z-House Project

Posted on: 10 Oct 2023

This innovative project will see Caring in Bristol continue their TAP for Bristol iniative with the charity renovating their office space for short term accommodation to support young adults at risk of homelessness.

To mark World Homeless Day, which is today, Bristol City Centre BID has announced that half of future donations raised via their TAP for Bristol initiative will fund this new project with the other half becoming available as funding for local homeless charities to apply for.

Ever since 2020, TAP for Bristol donations have provided funds for Caring in Bristol to launch and expand their Homelessness Prevention Programme, supporting 1,187 people in Bristol and helping them move away from homelessness. In the last year, 95% of those supported by the charity have reported a positive outcome in their lives.

Now, Caring in Bristol have taken the step to renovate their own office space and, with support from the Night Shelter Transformation Fund, have developed the Z-House Project to provide short term accommodation to homeless people aged between 18 and 25 while their move-on options are secured.

Whilst 89% of those receiving support from the charity have reported better knowledge of their housing rights and 93% have reported increased confidence in sharing this knowledge, this new project will present further opportunities to help prevent young people from becoming homeless.

The Z-House Project shelter will be in the heart of Bristol and this new base will allow young people using the shelter to access other services, public transport, and education in addition to employment opportunities. The site will also offer two beds for longer term use, two rooms for emergency use, as well as practical support and essential skills.

Ian Byworth (CEO at Caring in Bristol) said:

“The solution to homelessness in our city lies in the joining up of contributions from across the city. The new youth shelter is one such example; providing much needed accommodation and support for young people facing homelessness – all made possible from the backing, donations and volunteering that others have provided.”

TAP for Bristol has raised £100,000 across its four-year lifespan and continues to go from strength to strength. World Homeless Day is marked on 10 October each year, drawing attention to the needs of those experiencing homelessness all over the world.
