Signalling the beginning of a new era for this historic theatre, Choir Boy tells the tale of Pharus, a young, black, queer student who leads a legendary gospel choir at his elite all boys prep school in America. When young Pharus’ pride is hurt by one if his peers, the audience follows the child on an exhilarating journey through the growing pains of humanity, tackling issues including sexuality, race, identity and brotherhood along the way.

Portrayed through a sensitive lens, this exciting coming of age story is filled with inspiring acapella gospel hymns and spirituals. World renowned playwright and screenwriter Tarell Alvin McCraney’s writing paints a joyous portrait of what it means to march to your own drum, indeed, the play was nominated ‘Best Play’ at the 2019 Tony Awards.

The talented cast for Bristol Old Vic’s production of Choir Boy includes Terique Jarrett (Motown the Musical, Find Me in Paris) as Pharus, Jyuddah Jaymes (Clique, Grantchester) as Pharus’ roommate AJ, Michael Ahomka-Lindsay (Legally Blonde, Newsies) as David and a host of other promising actors.

Bristol Old Vic have a busy season ahead with a myriad of massive theatre productions, including Arabian Nights (Thursday 23 November – Saturday 6 January), Metamorphosis (Wednesday 10 – Saturday 20 January) and Black Is The Color Of My Voice (Monday 12 – Saturday 17 February).
