When Pharus’ pride is hurt by one of the other students, the audience is taken on an exciting journey through the growing pains of humanity as the young protagonists tackle the issues of sexuality, race, identity and brotherhood on their journey to adulthood.
Told in a tender manner, this coming-of-age story is peppered with soul stirring acapella gospel hymns and spirituals. Renowned playwright and screenwriter Tarell Alvin McCraney paints a beautiful, joyous portrait that rejoices in all that it means to march to your own drum.
Choir Boy is Nancy Medina’s first effort in her new role as Bristol Old Vic’s Artistic Director, after she took over the mantle of long serving theatre chief Tom Morris. Speaking about her debut season curating, Medina said: “This season of plays shows that we can't do things alone - we are stronger together.”
Bristol Old Vic have a busy season ahead with a myriad of massive theatre productions, including Orpheus & Eurydice (Thursday 31 August – Saturday 2 September), Arabian Nights (Thursday 23 November – Saturday 6 January), Metamorphosis (Wednesday 10 – Saturday 20 January) and Black Is The Color Of My Voice (Monday 12 – Saturday 17 February).
