Following a sell-out success on its opening night, theatre lovers are advised to act fast if they want to catch Mojisola Adebayo’s award-winning play live at the Southville theatre.

Family Tree runs at Tobacco Factory until Saturday 17 June 2023.

From Actors Touring Company and renowned writer Mojisola Adebayo, this beautifully poetic drama confronts race, health, environment and the incredible legacy of one of the most influential black women of modern times – Henrietta Lacks.

Audiences should prepare themselves for a fearless play that is at once honest, hilarious, and ultimately transformative that acts as both a remembrance and celebration of Henrietta Lacks – one of the most remarkable people in medical history.

Lacks’ cell form provides the basis of the most important medical research and breakthroughs taking place today, from cancer to HIV, COVID to thalidomide. However, Lacks never knew any of this: in 1951, her cells were taken with neither her nor her family’s knowledge or permission.

Henrietta’s body was exploited by the medical establishment, and she has since been denied her place in the history books. Therefore, it is now the time for Henrietta’s incredible legacy to be transformed into something new and wonderful.

This brand-new national production – which is finishing its UK-wide tour at Tobacco Factory – is brought to life by critically acclaimed playwright Mojisola Adebayo (who won the Alfred Fagon Award for Family Tree) and director, Matthew Xia (The Wiz, Shebeen).

Following a sell-out opening showing last night, Family Tree runs at Tobacco Factory until Saturday 17 June 2023. Secure your tickets HERE.

Family Tree is part of Tobacco Factory Theatre’s new women-led summer season, with celebrated physical comedy Godot is a Woman and spoken word solo show MANIC to follow. Visit the Tobacco Factory Theatres website for more information.
