The brand-new installation, titled ‘Oil Fountain’, will be presented to the general public for the first time tomorrow amongst the grand interior of Bristol Cathedral.

Luke Jerram’s Oil Fountain will appear at Bristol Cathedral from Wednesday 14 June until Sunday 2 July.

Oil Fountain is the latest sculpture from a critically acclaimed Bristol-based installation artist, with the piece aiming to represent contemporary Western society’s reliance on oil and the need to move away from this dependency for the good of the environment.

This is a FREE art installation.

Luke Jerram’s piece is a fountain sculpture which, rather than water, flows with artificial oil fall into black reflective pools. This poignant artwork aims to stimulate important discussions by creating tension between striking visuals and its alarming, vital message.

The sculpture was created using recycled acrylic, detailed with depictions of plants and animals that have been made extinct by humanity’s impact on nature, created using a laser cutter.

Surrounded by the legendary medieval architecture of Bristol Cathedral, Oil Fountain’s visitors will reflect in the mirrored surface of the oil, thus creating arresting imagery that is sure to affect the cathedral’s visitors.

The sculpture will be accompanied by an exhibition exploring the importance of climate change in relation to Christianity as well as taking a look at the impact of climate change on both the planet and people. The exhibition has been written in partnership with the Cabot Institute and the Climate Psychology Alliance.

Various events and activities will also run alongside the installation with children’s trails investigating climate change and creating care, Cathedral Up Late events with themed cocktails, a Fitzhardinge Consort Concert celebrating the environment and eco-activism, and various lunchtime recitals. Find out more on the Cathedral website.

Luke Jerram’s Oil Fountain will appear at Bristol Cathedral from Wednesday 14 June until Sunday 2 July and is FREE to visit.
