The legendary actor will be live on stage at The Bristol Hippodrome next month to discuss and sign copies of his new memoir, A Pocketful of Happiness.

‘An Evening with Richard E. Grant’ will take place at The Bristol Hippodrome on Tuesday 9 May 2023.

Best known for roles in legendary films such as ‘Withnail and I’ and ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me’, Grant’s new book is moving and perceptive all at once, a beautifully written memoir that takes a candid look at an extraordinary life lived both in front of and away from the public eye.

Born and raised in Swaziland to a British family, Richard E. Grant moved to Britain in 1982 to pursue a career in acting. His first foray into the world of film came in 1987 as the inebriated titular role in the cult black comedy Withnail and I.

Off the back of widespread critical acclaim for his debut on-screen performance, Grant forged an impressive career for himself with supporting roles in blockbusters such as L.A. Story, Spice World, The Age of Innocence and Penelope.

He also supplemented his natural penchant for the weird and wonderful with various independent projects such as Peter Capaldi’s short Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life, which won the 1995 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film.

Over the last decade, Grant has appeared onscreen in film and TV classics including Doctor Who, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, The Outlaws and Star Wars as well as winning an Oscar nomination for his performance alongside Melissa McCarthy in 2018’s Can You Ever Forgive Me.

Now, Grant is taking his new memoir, A Pocketful of Happiness, to theatres around the UK, considering the inspiration behind the book. How, when his beloved wife Joan died of cancer in 2021 after almost four decades of marriage, she set him a challenge: to find a pocketful of happiness in each day.

He found this instruction to be profoundly powerful, and A Pocketful of Sadness - which draws on contemporary stories and recollections of his personal life and glittering career - is Richard’s way of honouring that challenge.

Tender, moving, frequently hilarious, and with the chance to ask the actor your own questions, do not miss the chance to spend an evening with one of the great actors of our time, as he celebrates and cherishes life’s unexpected joys.
