Bristol noise punks Heavy Lungs release brand new single and music video

Posted on: 05 May 2023

The fast-rising quartet, who recently signed for indie label Alcopop! Records, have this week released ‘Dancing Man’ across all major platforms.

‘Dancing Man’, the new single from Heavy Lungs is available to stream now.

Fronted by Danny Nedelko of IDLES song fame, the band are returning with their first release since 2019 having won over the likes of Steve Lamacq and Iggy Pop in the past and shared a stage with renowned artists such as METZ, Thee Oh Sees, IDLES, JOHN, Crows and DITZ.

A product of Bristol’s leftfield music community, Heavy Lungs formed in the summer of 2017, quickly writing and recording their debut EP, Abstract Thoughts, and playing their first show within the first few months.

Natural hard workers, the four-piece (vocalist Nedelko, drummer George Garratt, guitarist Oliver Southgate and bassist James Minchall) have gone from strength to strength ever since, working throughout the global pandemic.

If their singer’s name seems familiar it’s because the Ukranian-born frontman is the titular subject of IDLES hit single ‘Danny Nedelko’. The distinctive vocalist has been hand-picked by photographer and grand couturier Hedi Slimane for CELINE's 'Portrait of a Performer' series with Esquire and has also collaborated with brands including Fred Perry and Jägermeister.

Touring extensively across the UK and Europe, with three EPs released so far, Heavy Lungs are just starting with plans for world domination well underway. Speaking about their new single ‘Dancing Man’, Nedelko has said:

“‘Dancing Man’ came about from a conversation that left me and George crying on the floor with laughter at rehearsal. The end result is an abstract tale about a sinister character. Nice to see another in-joke make it through. Sadly, not all of them do. But we will save that for the inevitable next EP.”

The track is accompanied by a dark, dynamic video from award-winning Bristol videographers, Clump Collective – known for their magnificent collaborations with the likes of Do Nothing, Katy J Pearson, Joe Lycett, Langkamer and more.

On the video, Heavy Lungs said: “They are absolutely extraordinary and have made a myriad of amazing videos. They are our dear friends and actually shot the video for our song ‘Jealous’ a while back too, so this was a very welcome homecoming.

“We shot it all in a day at their Bristol studio. Two dogs were present; they were very encouraging. The whole concept is centred around 5 outfits and dancing. The result is a surreal ride into the sinister realm of ‘Dancing Man’.”
