This Week: Welsh National Opera take over The Bristol Hippodrome

Posted on: 24 Apr 2023

Throughout the week, Bristol will play host to two brilliant operas, Blaze of Glory! and The Magic Flute – both presented by Welsh National Opera.

Blaze of Glory! will run at The Bristol Hippodrome from Tuesday 25 until Saturday 29 April while The Magic Flute will run from Wednesday 26 until Friday 28 April 2023.

The Welsh National Opera have a long and illustrious history of bringing the power, drama and raw emotion of opera to as wide an audience as possible with over 70 years of performance at the very highest level.

Tickets for both shows can be found on The Bristol Hippodrome website.

First up is Blaze of Glory!, which begins tomorrow and runs until Saturday 29 April. Set in the 1950s Welsh Valleys, this WNO original follows the fortunes of a small mining community who embark on a magical musical journey when they reform their Male Voice Choir in the wake of a terrible mining disaster.

Led by their heroic Chorus Master with support from the strong-willed women of the community, the men embark on a fantastical journey that sees them kidnap a yodeller, take part in the historic trans-Atlantic link-up with Paul Robeson and much more besides.

Blaze of Glory! celebrates the Land of Song and the power of community spirit with traditional Welsh harmonies blending with 50s style acapella, operetta, gospel, big band and Lindy Hop. Grab your tickets HERE.

Running for only two days between Wednesday 26 and Friday 28 April, The Magic Flute will take opera lovers on a quest for truth and discovery. Join Tamino as he quests through a land of mystery, magic and adventure to save Pamina from an evil enchanter, armed with a magic flute and bells and accompanied by his endearing sidekick Bird Catcher.

Tamino’s journey will see him run into a cast of unforgettable characters – from the mysterious Queen of the Night to animals that can be tamed with music. However, as Tamino continues his journey, he becomes increasingly aware that all is not what it seems.

The Magic Flute is a family opera with a reputation as the perfect first opera. WNO’s new production gives the magical fairytale a modern twist. Now, Bristol audiences can feast their eyes on vibrant sets and costumes to Mozart’s music and a witty story. Grab your tickets HERE.
