July will see the city’s biggest film festival take over The Mall Gardens in Clifton for their brand-new event ‘Clifton Summer Screenings’.

The inaugural ‘Clifton Summer Screenings’ will see a weekend-long outdoor mini-fest take place between Friday 28 and Sunday 30 July 2023 with an exciting programme of blockbusters scheduled.

Read on for a rundown of what to expect and head to the Bristol Film Festival website for more information.

With support from Clifton Village BID and a beautiful summer setting, Bristol Film Festival’s ‘Clifton Summer Screenings’ event will see a pop-up cinema spring up in The Mall Gardens with covered seating for up to 200 guests.

The space will also feature a state-of-the-art LED screen and supplied wireless headphones offering top-notch audio ensuring a top-notch cinema experience, no matter the weather. Audiences can enjoy a relaxing drink in the Gardens pre-screening with 15 classic films shown throughout the weekend in this unique event.

Kicking off a busy day of films on Friday 28 July is a family-friendly double header of Disney musical favourite Moana, with its Oscar-nominated soundtrack courtesy of Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Aardman’s 2000 debut feature, Chicken Run.

Also scheduled for the Friday is star-studded comedy-drama The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, all-time sing-along classic Grease (which is sure to get the crowd singing) and a trip back to where it all began with the original Star Wars chapter, A New Hope.

Saturday 29 July also begins with two family favourites in the shape of Disney’s radical retelling of the Rapunzel fairy tale, Tangled, and Paddington – the heartwarming tale of Britain’s most beloved bear.

It will then be time for a spot of action satire with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s Wells-based comedy, Hot Fuzz; Oscar-winning musical La La Land starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone; and dance-heavy fan favourite, Dirty Dancing.

The final day of this exciting event (Sunday 30 July) will be kicked off in style with Oscar-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda musical, Encanto and everyone’s favourite animated fairytale, Shrek – the first film in a critically acclaimed franchise.

Finally, a trio of wonderful screenings will begin with the acclaimed Helena-Bonham-Carter starring adaptation of E.M. Forster’s A Room With a View. The event will then be closed by feel-good phenomenon Mamma Mia! featuring ABBA’s best-known hits and legendary time-hopping comedy Back To The Future.

‘Clifton Summer Screenings’ will run at The Mall Gardens in Clifton between Friday 28 and Sunday 30 July 2023.
