Bristol’s largest repertory film festival, curated by Bristol favourites 20th Century Flicks, is returning once again next month to celebrate a whole range of cult film genres.

Forbidden Worlds Film Festival runs at the former Bristol IMAX between Thursday 18 and Sunday 21 May 2023.

This year’s edition of the festival will focus on some of cinema’s most iconic stop-motion pioneers as well as world class puppeteers and their on-screen creations to mark the 90th anniversary of 1933’s colossus, King Kong. Special guests include Vanessa Harryhausen, the daughter of stop-motion animation legend, Ray Harryhausen.

Forbidden Worlds’ celebration of cinema’s creature creators and masters of makeup and maquettes include a focus on the likes of stop-motion pioneers Willis H. O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen with screenings of iconic flicks King Kong (1933) and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958).

Other special-effects legends honoured in this festival include Stan Winston – creator of screen creatures in Jurassic Park and Predator – with a special showing of The Terminator (1984). Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) will honour the make-up maestro Rick Baker, while a screening of Starship Troopers (1997) will celebrate stop-motion star Phil Tippett.

Alongside these monstrous movies, audiences from Bristol and beyond can settle down to enjoy the cult classic Return to Oz (1985) and a new 2K restoration of the horror Dolls (1987).

Last year’s inaugural Forbidden Worlds at the former Bristol IMAX was the city’s first genre film festival, dedicated to screening the best cult classics from the fantasy, action, science fiction and horror genres from all over the world and celebrating those that made them.

This first edition of the festival saw more than 1,100 attendees enjoy genre classics and cult curios - including Blade Runner, Mad Max 2, Poltergeist and more – on the biggest screen in the South-West, standing at 18m x 15m. You do not want to miss this!

Forbidden Worlds Film Festival runs at the former Bristol IMAX between Thursday 18 and Sunday 21 May 2023.

Full Festival (Thursday - Sunday), Weekend (Friday-Sunday), Day Passes and individual screening tickets are all available now from the festival website.
