There’s a transcendent audio-visual experience happening in the old IMAX this weekend

The IMAX in Bristol Aquarium is hosting an extravaganza of audio-visual artists & experiences, electronic music, and vintage video games all weekend.

The IMAX cinema in Bristol Aquarium has languished in the shadow of fish for a while now, ever since the IMAX company pulled out of the building, leaving the space and equipment gathering dust.

More recently, thanks to plucky pioneers like 20th Century Flix (who run Forbidden Worlds Festival) & Film Noir UK, the screen has burst back into life, with an expertly jury-rigged not-quite-IMAX-size-but-close-enough screen and mindblowing sound.

Now, the potential of the IMAX space is being fully realised with a three-day long stream of mindblowing audio-visual experiences scored by legendary electronic musicians.

The Holotronica Audio-Visual Weekend will feature remixed cinema, 3D holographic experiences, laser shows, and retro arcade games blown up to be seen on the IMAX’s massive screen.

The show features, of course, its namesake Holotronica – known for their cutting-edge holographic technology – who have worked with everyone from Marvel to Eurovision.

Alongside Holotroncia will be Ninja Tune legend Funki Porcini, who’s been pushing out pioneering experimental electronica for years alongside laser light shows – which will be produced by Laserium, who have been producing laser light shows for around 50 years.

As if that wasn’t enough, the show will also include unique visuals from AV-forerunners The Light Surgeons, and a set by DJ Cheeba – whose prolific mixes always come hand-in-hand with custom, hyperactive visual accompaniment.

Finally, the event also promises that retro arcade games, such as Street Fighter or Mario Kart, are going to be played on the IMAX's massive cinema screen - which is definitely something worth seeing, whether you're a videogame fan or not.

Holotronica’s takeover of the IMAX is a massive show, and is sure to be a hit with anyone looking for a more unique way to spend their weekend. Don’t miss out – who knows when something like this will come along again.

Tickets for the event, which takes place from 18:00-23:00, are £18, and are available from Headfirst for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
