Bristol’s largest repertory genre film festival is back for a four-day run in May with a brand-new theme...cinema’s iconic creatures and their creators.

Forbidden Worlds Film Festival runs at the former Bristol Imax Cinema, Bristol Aquarium between Thursday 18 and Sunday 21 May 2023.

A stunning selection of ‘monster’ flicks will be complimented with a selection of films from action legend Michelle Yeoh as well as some genre classics inspired by the archives of beloved Bristol video shop (and festival creators) 20th Century Flicks.

Festival passes are available now and can be secured HERE.

Ninety years ago this year, King Kong was first unleashed to audiences all over the world, changing cinema forever in the process. 2023 sees Forbidden Worlds Film Festival celebrate the ground-breaking Creature Creators who transformed our perception of ‘monsters’ through the use of stop motion animation and puppetry.

In addition to a special showing of the original King Kong, 20th Century Flicks are inviting film lovers to view other classics including the classic Harryhausen adventure The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), seminal sci-fi action film The Terminator (1984), terrifying fairy tale Return to Oz (1984) and much more.

The biggest screen in the South-West will also host a celebration of the career of action legend Michelle Yeoh with three of her most renowned movies – Royal Warriors (1986), Police Story 3: Supercop (1992) and The Heroic Trio (1993) – all scheduled to be screened.

As ever, the festival will also take a deep dive into the extensive film archive of Bristol institution, 20th Century Flicks. This carefully selected roster includes a new restoration of The Way of the Dragon (1972) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bruce Lee’s passing.

Those who like to live on the edge will also be able to enjoy vertigo-inducing blockbuster Cliffhanger (1993) for its 30th anniversary and Euro-slasher Amsterdamned (1988) which sees terror unleashed on the Dutch capital’s picturesque canals.

Forbidden Worlds Film Festival runs at the former Bristol Imax Cinema, Bristol Aquarium between Thursday 18 and Sunday 21 May 2023. Festival passes are available now and can be purchased HERE.
