One of musical theatre’s most spectacular feats, the production will return to the city for an unprecedented third time this summer.

 

Disney’s The Lion King runs at The Bristol Hippodrome from Thursday 18 May to Saturday 1 July 2023.

 

Based on Disney’s classic 1994 movie, the internationally acclaimed production is back for a 6-week run following two previous sold out runs, the first back in 2019 and the second in March 2022.

 

Tickets are available from £20, and the age recommendation is 6+.

This astonishing, daring production brings the much-loved story to life using a blend of vibrant masks, puppets and costumes, telling the story of the young lion Simba’s epic adventure as he struggles with the responsibilities of loss, love, growing up and becoming king.

 

Julie Taymor’s international sensation stage adaptation of The Lion King launched on Broadway in 1997. Since then, there have been 25 global productions in 9 different languages including Japanese, German, Korean, French, Mandarin and Spanish.

 

The Lion King’s previous tour broke attendance records all over the UK during the last tour and, since it premiered in 1999, the London production has welcomed over 16 million theatregoers and is the sixth longest-running West End musical.

The beautiful artistry behind the ritualised puppetry, mask, and movement comes from a dedicated team of designers who drew on a rich range of cultural influences to recreate the colours and vast expanses of the African Savanna.

 

Elton John and Time Rice have added three new numbers to the five they wrote for the film’s award-winning score with additional material from Julie Taymor, Mark Mancina and South African composer Lebo M. 

 

The result is a fusion of popular Western music and the sounds and distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, featuring the Academy Award-winning ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’ and the atmospheric ‘Shadowland’.

Disney’s The Lion King runs at The Bristol Hippodrome from Thursday 18 May to Saturday 1 July 2023.
