Squid announce new album and two massive Bristol shows

Posted on: 09 Feb 2023

The Bristol-based art-rockers yesterday announced their upcoming album O Monolith, the follow-up to their 2021 critically acclaimed debut, Bright Green Field.

Squid will release O Monolith on Friday 9 June with a double-header at Bristol’s SWX scheduled for Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October.

Yesterday’s sophomore album and tour announcements come alongside the release of a brand-new single, ‘Swing (In A Dream)’, and an accompanying video, which can be watched below.

Tickets for Squid’s Autumn tour of the UK go on sale Monday 13 February. Pre-sale is available to those who pre-order O Monolith on the band's website.

Originally formed in Brighton but now based in Bristol, Squid are made up of lead singer/drummer Ollie Judge, guitarists Louis Borlase and Anton Pearson, bassist Laurie Nankivell and keyboardist Arthur Leadbetter.

With influences ranging from krautrock groups old and new including Neu! And BEAK> to radical writer JG Ballard, Squid’s dynamic, anxious and jazz-infused sound quickly caught the eye of serial alternative hitmakers, Speedy Wunderground.

Through the label, the quintet released their second EP Town Centre (produced by Speedy Wunderground boss Dan Carey) to widespread critical acclaim thanks to their refreshing blend of disco-funk and post-punk.

The following year, Squid signed for the renowned UK electronic label Warp; an unusual move for a guitar-based band. During the 2020 national lockdown, the band set about recording their full-length debut – once more produced by Carey.

Bright Green Fields was released in 2021, proving an instant hit. The album succeeded in capturing the zeitgeist of the time with multi-genre style, paranoid, dystopian themes and sheer energy. Bright Green Fields peaked at Number 4 in the Album Charts and received rave reviews from a number of respected publications.

Now, two years on, Squid are back and set to release their sophomore O Monolith on Friday 9 June. The first taste of this new project comes in the form of new single ‘Swing (In A Dream)’, which is out now and can be streamed here.

To celebrate to release of the album, Squid are taking to the road in October for a tour that will be kicked off by two shows at Bristol’s SWX on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October.

Tickets for these gigs go on sale Monday 13 February, although pre-sale is available to those who pre-order O Monolith here.
