Legendary actor Richard E. Grant is coming to Bristol

Posted on: 01 Feb 2023

From Withnail and I to Can You Ever Forgive Me and everything in between, Richard E Grant is a British icon through and through – and now he’s written a book.

‘An Evening with Richard E. Grant’ will take place at The Bristol Hippodrome on Tuesday 9 May 2023.

Grant is gearing up to tour the UK, discussing his brand-new book: A Pocketful of Happiness. Funny, moving and perceptive all at once, this beautifully written memoir is a candid exploration of an extraordinary life lived both in front of and away from the public eye.

Born in Swaziland to a family with British routes, Richard E. Grant moved to Britain in 1982. His first film role came in 1987 as the inebriated titular character in the cult black comedy Withnail and I.

After gaining critical acclaim for the role, Grant went on to secure supporting roles in blockbuster films including L.A. Story, Spice World, The Age of Innocence and Penelope as well as various independent projects such as Peter Capaldi’s short Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life, which won the 1995 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film.

In more recent times, Grant’s onscreen career has seen him star in film and TV classics, notably Doctor Who, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones and Star Wars. He also gained an Oscar nomination for 2018’s Can You Ever Forgive Me.

The acting maverick has decided to tell his showbiz story with uplifting reflections of love and loss in his new book, A Pocketful of Happiness and, in the Spring, Grant will take the memoir to stages all over the UK.

At The Bristol Hippodrome in May he will consider the inspiration behind his book – how, when his beloved wife Joan died in 2021 after almost forty years together, she set him a challenge: to find a pocketful of happiness in every day.

He found this instruction to be profoundly powerful, and A Pocketful of Sadness; which draws on contemporary stories and recollections of his personal life and glittering career; is Richard’s way of honouring that challenge.

Tender, moving, frequently hilarious, and with the chance to ask Richard your own questions, do not miss the opportunity to spend an evening with one of the great actors of our time, as he celebrates and cherishes life’s unexpected joys.
