Garth Marenghi was a character originally penned in 2000 by Matthew Holness and Richard Ayoade for their Perrier Award-nominated Edinburgh Fringe show, Garth Marrenghi’s Fright Knight.
The show focused on the parody horror writer loosely based on Stephen King and its sequel, Garth Marenghi’s Netherhead, went one further and won the Perrier Award the next year.
The success of the production saw Marenghi make his first TV appearance in 2004 with Channel 4 slasher comedy, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. Featuring prominent comedy actors such as Matt Berry and Alice Lowe as well as Holness and Ayoade, the show has received widespread critical acclaim and cult classic status despite its relatively low ratings.
A conceited horror writer, the character of Garth Marenghi is an extreme parody, often comparing himself to legendary figures such as Shakespeare, da Vinci and James Joyce. To Garth he is the “master of the macabre”, however, in reality, he is a hack, unaware of his lack of talent.
Now, almost 20 years after Darkplace, Marenghi is stepping out of the shadows once more with a brand new multi-volume epic, TerrorTome. The novel, that was published earlier this month contains three dark tales from the renowned Frighterman, Darkscribe and Doomsage.
Holness is taking his cult character on the road with an immensely popular UK tour currently taking place and another planned for 2023. Marrenghi’s appearance in Bristol will see him read from TerrorTome and maybe even take part in a Q&A. Hardback copies will be available to purchase on the day with book signings also taking place.
