RESCHEDULED Fictional horror author Garth Marenghi to appear in Bristol next year

Posted on: 30 Nov 2022

The cult comedy character, created and played by Matthew Holness, has announced an extensive UK tour in 2023 to support his Sunday Times Bestseller, TerrorTome.

Garth Marenghi and TerrorTome are heading to The Bristol Hippodrome on Friday 10 February 2023 (RESCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY 13 MAY).

Currently journeying all over the country as part of a sell-out UK tour that saw Holness drop by the Redgrave Theatre earlier this month, fans will have the chance to see “horror literature’s greatest living author” on an even bigger stage when he returns early next year.

Tickets for this event go on general sale on Friday 2 December.

Garth Marenghi was a character originally penned in 2000 by Matthew Holness and Richard Ayoade for their Perrier Award-nominated Edinburgh Fringe show, Garth Marrenghi’s Fright Knight.

The show focused on the parody horror writer loosely based on Stephen King and its sequel, Garth Marenghi’s Netherhead, went one further and won the Perrier Award the next year.

The success of the production saw Marenghi make his first TV appearance in 2004 with Channel 4 slasher comedy, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. Featuring prominent comedy actors such as Matt Berry and Alice Lowe as well as Holness and Ayoade, the show has received widespread critical acclaim and cult classic status despite its relatively low ratings.

A conceited horror writer, the character of Garth Marenghi is an extreme parody, often comparing himself to legendary figures such as Shakespeare, da Vinci and James Joyce. To Garth he is the “master of the macabre”, however, in reality, he is a hack, unaware of his lack of talent.

Now, almost 20 years after Darkplace, Marenghi is stepping out of the shadows once more with a brand new multi-volume epic, TerrorTome. The novel, that was published earlier this month contains three dark tales from the renowned Frighterman, Darkscribe and Doomsage.

Holness is taking his cult character on the road with an immensely popular UK tour currently taking place and another planned for 2023. Marrenghi’s appearance in Bristol will see him read from TerrorTome and maybe even take part in a Q&A. Hardback copies will be available to purchase on the day with book signings also taking place.

Tickets for Garth Marenghi’s TerrorTome at The Bristol Hippodrome on Friday 10 February 2023 go on sale this Friday, 2 December. Buy yours HERE.
