Looking forward to this talk from @rogerg44 on the late great actor and activist Sidney Poitier, followed by a screening of new documentary Sidney: https://t.co/N9Qs9eajDO
Poitier rose to prominence in the 1950s with his breakthrough role in ‘Black Jungle’ (1955), giving the world their first taste of his typical on-screen poise and grace.
Three years later he starred alongside Tony Curtis in ‘The Defiant Ones’ (1958), earning his first - and the first ever for a Black male – Oscar nod.
Six years later he bagged his first Academy Award win - again the first for a Black male in the Best Actor Category - for his work in ‘Lilies of The Field’ (1964).
To celebrate his vast list of accomplishments, both on and off screen, Watershed has invited Dr Roger Griffith MBE to deliver a talk about the actor.
Griffith will explore the ground-breaking star’s catalogue of work and the continuing relevance of ‘The Defiant Ones’ (1958) and ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ (1967).
Following the talk, ‘Sidney’ – a documentary exploring Poitier’s life, career and accomplishments with interviews from Denzel Washington, Barbara Streisand and Spike Lee to name a few – will be screened.
Further details about this event and tickets can be found via Watershed’s website.
