Seven summer holiday activity ideas for the whole family
Posted on: 22 Jul 2022Summer is well and truly upon us and, for the next six weeks, school's out.
Time to start thinking about how to keep your little ones entertained! Hoping to ease the burden (if only slightly) of planning activities, we've put together a list of seven events and locations for the whole family to enjoy this summer break.
Bristol Beacon I Hoo Ha festival I 17-19 August
Returning this summer with a jam-packed three days of music and activities, Bristol Beacon's Hoo Ha Festival is the perfect occasion to let off steam, dance and laugh as a family.
Alongside a (yet to be announced) programme of musical performances, there will be plenty of fun-filled opportunities for you and your little people to get creative together - the perfect way to use up that holiday energy!
Hoo Ha will run from Wednesday 17 August until Friday 19 August. The first day will be more relaxed, offering families looking for quieter settings the chance to enjoy the festival.
Best of all though, it's entirely FREE! Booking is required and more information about how to do this will be released soon, so be sure to follow updates via Bristol Beacon's website.

Bristol Light Festival I Luminarium I 4-14 August
Bristol Light Festival organizers have once again put together an exciting showcase of light and colour, this year heading straight for College Green with an immersive installation entitled, 'Luminarium'.
Running from Thursday 4 until Sunday 14 August, this free-to-access exhibit will see visitors enter a world of wonder and awe as they step into the world-renowned inflatable domes filled with sunlight and natural colour.
Aimed at all ages, 'Luminarium' promises to be a fascinating family activity. Take it from the 3 million people who have visited across 43 different countries since its creation in 1992.
Once again, this is a FREE activity. Bookings are advised but some walk-ins will be possible. Click here to find out more.
Ever-reliable, We The Curious have curated an exciting selection of one-off or limited-time-only family-friendly activities to get stuck into over the next six weeks.
Things look very different for the city centre organisation this summer after a fire damaged their permanent residency in April. But, undeterred, the team will be visiting every postcode in Bristol bringing the fun to your doorstep!
From their 'Sink or Swim' event testing your creative engineering skills to their 'Brainstorm With Swarm Robots' activity, there is still plenty of fun to be had with We The Curious.
All information regarding We The Curious' summer programme can be found on their website.
All aboard!?

Explore the outdoors with Avon Wildlife Trust
There is a wealth of outdoor activities to enjoy as a family in and around Bristol. So much, in fact, that poring through all of your options can be quite intimidating.
Luckily, Avon Wildlife Trust is on hand to cut through the noise with a breakdown of free-to-access local natural sites. They also host wild play sessions and wildlife watching groups.
The organisation's programmes are aged at children as young as two and above, so there is something for everyone in the great outdoors this summer.
Pay Avon Wildlife Trust's website a visit to find more information.
Learn more about indigenous wildlife and discover creatures from across the globe at Wild Place Project - a family-friendly wildlife conservation and education charity - this summer.
Take a journey back in time and discover the role of bears in British ecosystems before their native extinction alongside Wolves, Lynxes and Wolverines - also once key species in this country.
Also witness the wildlife that inhabits the distant Benoue National Park, Cameroon, and the Lemurs that scamper across Madagascan treetops at the site's two international enclosures.
Ticket holders must arrive within a designated 30-minute slot to be admitted into the grounds. Be sure to check all the necessary information on Wild Place Project's website.
This summer break, BS13 favourite Windmill Hill is hosting a plethora of family-friendly activities.
Ranging from artistic sessions to cork boat racing and a farm club; from family theatre to folk music around a campfire and spoken word performances, there’s something for everyone
Be sure to visit Windmill Hill City Farm's website for all the information you need.
The hugely anticipated and groundbreaking experience, 'Wake The Tiger' - billed as the world's first Amazement Park - is taking people on a journey to a parallel universe this summer.
Arriving on Saturday 30 July, the supernatural, sci-fi-themed exhibition featuring 27 individual spaces aims to inspire visitors to reconnect with their environment and community.
Attendees will travel through illuminated singing ice, underwater worlds, futuristic mechanical chambers and elder forests as they explore this unique world.
More information and tickets can be found on Wake The Tiger's website.
