'Dishes of Discovery' coming to SS Great Britain this summer

Posted on: 18 Jul 2022

Taste the world this summer on the deck of the world's first great ocean liner.

This summer, from 23 July until 4 September, the SS Great Britain will host 'Dishes of Discovery' - an event sampling Victorian delicacies the crew and passengers aboard the vessel encountered during its 19th-century heyday.

Working with the ship's archivists, the dishes on offer have been created by local social enterprise, Travelling Kitchen, drawing on recipes found across the globe; from Mumbai to Cape Town and all the way to Crimea.

For more information about the event and how to book your place aboard the ship, visit SS Great Britain's website.

Interpretation Manager at SS Great Britain Natalie Fey said in a statement: "During her working life, the SS Great Britain journeyed to six continents, 24 countries and journeyed around the world an incredible 32 times.

"Those passengers and crew who travelled abroad experienced many new cultural sights, sounds, smells, and most importantly, tastes... 'Dishes of Discovery' aims to give visitors to the SS Great Britain a chance to experience the thrill of encountering new and unusual foods for the first time."

The recipes used during this event are derived from accounts left by people who spent time aboard the ship when it was active, including Samuel Archer, the vessel's surgeon on a voyage to Mumbai in 1857.

Excerpts from his dairy inspired the green coriander and coconut chutney set to feature as a dish at the event. His entries will also be on display, giving visitors a greater sense of immersion in the history of the ship and its passengers and crew.

Sarah Francis, founder of Travelling Kitchen, said in a statement: "Food is something that everyone can relate to and one of Travelling Kitchen's aims is to use food and cooking to celebrate the diversity of the history and culture around us...

"Researching traveller accounts and cookery books of the time has been fascinating. We have tested and tried these, sometimes adapting to reflect availability of ingredients and modern tastes but hopefully still giving visitors to the ship this summer a taste of the past and SS Great Britain's journey around the world."
