An immersive local history exhibition is coming to Bristol in August

Posted on: 06 Jul 2022

Explore Bristol stories across virtual and augmented reality as well as a series of installations.

Immersive storytelling group StoryTrails will be using both an app and local performers to present a pioneering time-hopping tour of the city that we think we know so well.

Running as part of Local and Community History Month, the exhibition will allow attendees to find new and magical ways to experience the city through a selection of uniquely Bristol stories.

The exhibition is free and will take place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 August 2022 at Bristol Central Library.

Through the series of installations, that bring together the physical and the digital, visitors to the exhibition will be able to experience their urban surroundings in a whole new way.

The trail itself will be guided by a special mobile AR app and visitors will be led to various story points along a pre-determined route, with a choice of story trails to follow. Outside Bristol Central Library, they will enter a virtual story portal – beginning the StoryTrails experience.

Utilising a blend of augmented reality experiences taken from the BFI and BBC archives, StoryTrails has made it possible to experience local history where it actually happened, learning new stories and hearing new voices while revisiting well-known streets.

Inside the library, visitors will be able to fly through a specially created virtual map of Bristol made up of 3D models and audio stories recorded on site before having the opportunity to explore these stories further via virtual reality headsets.

Overall, there are 25 stories told by people from all over the city, each providing a unique insight into Bristol’s human history. A total of 50 creatives have worked on the project that is taking place UK-wide in cities including Sheffield, Swansea, Newport and Bradford.

The StoryTrails project will be accompanied by a new documentary film featuring historian David Olusoga that will then be screened nationwide on BBC iPlayer.

StoryTrails Bristol will take place on Saturday 20 August at 18:00 and Sunday 21 August at 17:00. The exhibition is free and will take place at Bristol Central Library.
