A family-friendly immersive experience is coming to Bristol this summer

Posted on: 14 Jul 2022

The installation, entitled Luminarium, is a fully accessible multi-sensory pop-up that will feature at Bristol’s College Green for ten days in August from 13:00 till 19:00 daily.

Presented by Bristol Light Festival, Luminarium will be in the city from Thursday 4 till Sunday 14 August.

Bristol Light Festival is a yearly event showcasing Bristol as the vibrant, vibrant, playful and creative city that we know so well, filling the city streets with light and colour through carefully curated light artworks.

The pop-up is free to visit and tickets can be booked online here, walk-in slots are also available.

The brand-new light installation from Bristol Light Festival will see visitors enter a world of wonder and awe as they step into the world-renowned inflatable domes filled with sunlight and natural colour this summer.

Inspired by natural forms, Islamic and Gothic religious buildings and modern architecture, the Luminarium is a one-of-a-kind, sunlight-powered sensory experience that features vibrant colours, domes, tunnels and pods.

An Instagrammers dream due to its beautiful aesthetics, this instillation is truly aimed at every age group as well as (due to the multi-sensory nature of the environment created) those with complex needs.

This inflatable walk-in art experience is half the size of a football pitch and has travelled all over the world, visiting 43 countries and welcoming more than 3 million visitors since it was created by Alan Parkinson in 1992.

Speaking about the Luminarium, Parkinson (designer and founder of Architects of Air) said:

“We grew Architects of Air from a theatre project for people with learning disabilities. Inclusivity has remained at the heart of the work we do with each exhibition of Luminarium. It embraces all ages, all abilities, all cultures, and communities.

“The residency at College Green this summer will be the first time a Luminarium has     visited Bristol in 21 years, and we can’t wait to see how people interact with the experience - it’s a truly unique response from each visitor.”

Vicky Lee (Head of Bristol City Centre BID) added:

“The summer in Bristol is a wonderful time to be in the city centre and hosting the magical Luminarium will be a great boost for the businesses in the area. It will fill our city with colour and art and be a fantastic addition to the already bustling calendar of events and experiences for tourists and residents alike.

“We’re also looking forward to programming the experience with sessions from Bristol creatives to include music, poetry and even some yoga. We will be outreaching to communities across Bristol to invite them to enjoy this unique free experience.”

Luminarium is coming to College Green between Thursday 4 and Sunday 14 August. The event is free to visit and tickets can be booked on the event page now, walk-ins will also be available.
