Alternative rock duo Blood Red Shoes are in Bristol next week

Posted on: 01 Jun 2022

The renowned two-piece - known for their dark, fiery sound - are visiting Bristol as part of a run of UK shows celebrating their latest album, Ghosts on Tape, which was released earlier this year.

With Brighton band CIEL as support, Blood Red Shoes are heading to The Fleece in a show that was originally scheduled for January.

With rock credentials that span over 17 years, the band will be back in Bristol on Wednesday 8 June after years away from the live circuit spent living on other sides of the Atlantic.

Laura-Mary Carter (vocals and guitar) and Steven Ansell (drums and vocals) formed Blood Red Shoes in 2004 while living in Brighton.

The band quickly began to build a steady buzz with a string of early singles and a busy schedule of live shows – including support slots with Biffy Clyro and Maximo Park.

The two-piece released their debut album, Box of Secret, in 2008 and have since followed it up with Fire Like This (2010), In Time to Voices (2012), Blood Red Shoes (2014) and Get Tragic (2019).

After starting out with a more laid-back, classic indie sound, Blood Red Shoes’ sound quickly developed into a heavy punk rock outfit known for their visceral and riotous live sets.

Ghosts on Tape, which was released in January, is a huge jump into new terrain for the band after 17-years together. Musically and emotionally their most mature work, it is a complex, imaginative, and very gothic development of their sound.

Musically, it leaves almost no trace of their former selves. Many of the tracks on the record explore the twisted psyche of serial killers as Ghosts on Tape paints the picture of a dark, twisted world.

About the album, Ansell has said: “We have made an entire career out of being told what we are “not”, of being rejected, of not fitting in, and this album is us deliberately pushing into all of our strangeness, emphasising all of the things that make us different”.

As well as The Fleece, Blood Red Shoes will be visiting venues in the Isle of Man, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow, London, Brighton and Birmingham. Head to the band’s website for more information.
