Bristol IMAX set to reopen for Forbidden Worlds Film Festival

Posted on: 04 Mar 2022

The three-day festival will be presented by 20th Century Flix to celebrate the beloved Bristol video shop's 40th anniversary.

Forbidden Worlds Film Festival will be taking over the former Bristol IMAX in Bristol Aquarium, presenting a whole host of classic and cult films.

With a nod to 20th Century Flix’s inception forty years ago, the brand-new festival will be dedicated to genre cinema – the broad focus being masterpieces and curios from the year 1982.

The event will take place between 13 and 15 May 2022 with a broad range of films already announced; Early Bird weekend passes are already sold out, but regular weekend passes plus day tickets are still available from the festival website.

Screen timings for the event are yet to be announced but here is the schedule thus far…

Friday 13 May 2022

The iconic ‘Dracula A.D. 1972’ (Cert. 18); starring the late, great Christopher Lee on what would have been his 100th birthday; will kick off proceedings with style.

This will be followed by a screening of ‘Mad Max 2’ (Cert. 15), the post-apocalyptic warrior epic sees George Miller return as ex-pursuit cop Max Rockatansky. A secret late night horror movie will close the night, with the title to be announced closer to the festival’s launch.

Saturday 14 May 2022

Kicking off the Saturday line-up will be Don Bluth’s animated children’s classic, ‘The Secret of NIMH’ (Cert. U). With its iconic animation style and spellbinding sequences, the film became a staple at family homes during the 1980s.

1982 was a big year for 3D cinema and, on the Saturday, film archivist Tom Vincent will present ‘A History of 3-D Cinema’ – complete with digitally restored 3D clips of classic movies.

Frankenheimer’s 1982 action classic ‘The Challenge’ (Cert. 18) will be the third film and Saturday 14th’s line-up will be completed with the iconic horror film, ‘Poltergeist’ and a 4k restoration of the riotous and blood-spattered ‘Basket Case’.

Sunday 15 May 2022

From the creator of ‘The Muppets’, 1982’s ‘The Dark Crystal’ (Cert. PG) was far darker than audiences expected. Inspired by the Grimm’s’ Fairy Tales, this cult classic is the perfect film to open the festival’s final day.

No celebration of 1982 cinema would be complete without Ridley Scott’s sci-fi noir classic ‘Blade Runner’ (Cert. 15), a perfect opportunity for those haven’t had the chance to see the masterpiece on the big screen.

The Sunday line-up also includes Taiwanese psychotronic movie ‘Thrilling Blood Sword’ (Cert. 18) complete with English subtitles, mad ‘Alien’ rip-off ‘Forbidden World [a.k.a. Mutant]’ (Cert. 18) and yet another secret horror screening.

The venue for Forbidden Worlds Film Festival is the former Bristol IMAX cinema, a space that hasn’t hosted regular screenings in more than a decade. The impressively large auditorium is sure to provide the perfect venue for the perfect visual experience!

Early bird weekend passes are long gone but regular full weekend passes are available at £75. Friday passes are £20, Saturday and Sunday tickets £35 while individual screening tickets are coming soon. Head to the Forbidden Worlds Film Festival website to grab your ticket now.
