Posted on: 26 Jan 2022

Every year Spike Island, Bristol’s much loved contemporary art centre, bring both emerging and established artists from all over the world together to exhibit their work in their museum-sized gallery spaces.

The gallery has already announced a host of exciting events coming next month with talks and exhibitions from a plethora of gifted and diverse artists, here we’ll look at upcoming February highlights.

These events are all free to enter, although donations are welcome. Head to the Spike Island website for more information.

ADAM KHALIL AND BAYLEY SWEITZER WITH OBA, NOSFERASTA | Saturday 5 February to Sunday 8 May

This major new film is a Rastafarian vampire film starring and co-written by Oba, a Trinidadian artist and musician based in Brooklyn. Nosferasta reimagines Oba’s origin story in this chilling tale that confronts and explores themes around colonialization.

There will be a preview for this exhibition on Friday 4 February.

CANDICE LIN, PIGS AND POISON | Saturday 5 February to Sunday 8 May

This major new commission by Candice Lin furthers the LA artist’s ongoing research into marginalised histories and colonial legacies. Lin uses diverse materials such as opium poppy and lard to confront stories of migration, biological warfare and much more.

There will be a preview for this exhibition on Friday 4 February.

ASIAN FUTURES, WITHOUT ASIANS, AN ILLUSTRATED PRESENTATION BY ASTRIA SUPARAK | Tuesday 15 February

Part critical analysis, part reflective essay, this screening is filled with anger, humour, and information all at once using a wide interpretation of ‘Asian’ to reflect current and historical geopolitical trends and self-definitions.

Through anecdotes, historical documents, films, and television shows; Suparak discusses the implications of borrowing from and misrepresenting Asian cultures.

IN CONVERSATION: ADAM KHALIL AND BAYLEY SWEITZER WITH ADAM MURRAY | Thursday 24 February

Filmmakers Adam Khalil and Bayley Sweitzer talk about their new film, Nosferasta, (screening at Spike Island) with horror film expert, Adam Murray. They will discuss the themes, production process and vampirism in this one-off talk.
