LGBTQ+ History Month 2022 at M Shed next month

Posted on: 25 Jan 2022

LGBTQ+ History Month runs all throughout February with educational events and exhibitions taking place up and down the country and Bristol is no different.

M Shed have curated a busy February programme exploring and celebrating the history and heritage of LGBTQ+ people in Bristol and all over the world through a series of online talks.

The talks will be held for free over Zoom, free tickets can be found on the M Shed website.

LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH: FROM CHINA TO UK, QUIYAN CHEN’S JOURNEY AS A LGBTQ+ ACTIVIST | 12 February

Qiuyan Chen is a passionate LGBTQ+ activist and co-curator of the Queer Chinese Community Art Festival. When Qiuyan moved to the UK, she experienced neglect, harassment, and stereotypes because she is a queer woman of colour.

This talk will answer a range of questions including: what’s the situation for LGBTQ+ people in China? How do queer Chinese people rethink their intersectional identities? And how can the community promote cross-cultural connections?

LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH: AN ANGLO-AMERICAN LOVE STORY | 16 February

This talk takes a look at the amazing story of John Judkyn (a middle-class antique dealer from the Midland) and Dallas Pratt (the grandson of a US oil magnate with a vast fortune).

The pair’s chance meeting in 1937 led to a long and loving relationship that was embodied by their shared love for collecting; a passion that inspired them to build the American Museum in Britain at Claverton Manor near Bath.

The museum lives on today, recently reaching its 60th anniversary.

LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH: ALLAN GORGON, A SHIP’S BOY | 17 February

The museum’s third talk tells the story of 15-year-old Allan Gordon who, in 1902, was arrested in Bristol for ‘wandering about without visible means’ – a charge that was clearly fabricated.

Allan had refused to undergo a compulsory medical check and was ‘compelled to admit her sex’. When this was discovered by the press, they became determined to find out more about Allan Gordon.

LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH: GIRLS ON STAGE | 24 February

In the final talk of the series, Cheryl Morgan takes attendees on a tour of some of the queerest moments in theatre, including some recent research about people who played female roles in Shakespeare.

These talks will be conducted in partnership with Outstories Bristol for LGBTQ+ History Month 2022. Outstories Bristol is a website that collects and preserves the social history of LGBTQ+ people living in or associated with Bristol. To find out more, head to the Outstories website
