Shop Local and support a brilliant Bristol independent this weekend.

Bristol-based CBD supplier, hemp wellness advocates and pop-up kitchen Only Green have become the latest independent business added to the BARBI App, offering up a fully-plant-based menu for delivery or collection.

Located in the heart of Stokes Croft, Only Green opened their shop in early 2020 and quickly became the authority for CBD products in the area, stocking everything from infused oils and balms to CBD teas, coffees and protein powder.

In response to the coronavirus crisis and the extended closure of their store, however, the team have turned their focus to the kitchen, preparing a creative vegan menu for you to enjoy at home.

Earlier this week we caught up with Only Green co-founder and director, Ian Curnow, to find out more about the brand's beginnings and what they've got in store as they get up and running on the BARBI App.

When did Only Green open and what was the motivation to get it up and running?

The Only Green brand concept originated in the Balearic islands many years ago whilst we were living there doing seasonal work. Fast forward to January 2020, we opened the doors to our first Only Green shop in Stokes Croft, and our licensed hemp farm in Ibiza is well underway.

Our primary motivation with this project is to spread knowledge & awareness about everything green, from the hemp plant to sustainability & wellness. The benefits of the hemp plant and its primary healing compound - CBD - have been overlooked for several years and have been underpinned by negativity so we feel a responsibility to change this perspective and share its natural values with the world.

We also feel that our generation is the key to regenerating this world so we want to be a part of that journey as well.

Your menu is obviously fully plant-based, has that been a core part of your delivery launch?

When we opened our shop we always had aspirations of selling fresh natural juices and plant-based snacks as well as our CBD product line, as we wanted people to start associating CBD with wellness and health and not just smoking and corner shops.

Our plant-based kitchen only came about due to the pandemic as we saw an opportunity to rent the kitchen opposite our shop and starting food delivery in lockdown. Our friend who is a vegan chef joined the team and we created a small plant-based offering to give to our customers.

We try to use as many local & organic ingredients as possible and offer many gluten-free options to cater for everyone.

With a lot of competition in terms of plant-based food in Bristol, what makes Only Green stand out?

The fact that we know each of our products from seed to shelf and the passion we have towards what we are doing. Everything we sell we either eat or take ourselves and we know exactly where it has come from. We want to show full transparency with every aspect of the brand and I feel that this puts us in a unique position.

What would you recommend to people ordering from Only Green for the first time?

Two dishes always come to mind. The first is our All Day Breakfast Muffin in which we use local tempeh from Tempeh Meades to recreate a 'sausage' like patty along with a vegan 'egg' served in a sourdough muffin with our homemade fruity brown sauce with the options of extra 'bacon', avocado & hash browns.

The second is our banana blossom 'fish' taco which is a Mexican-inspired plant-based fish taco served with homemade corn chips & pico de gallo. We offer these both as a meal deal with one of our fresh juices.

You're now fully up and running on the BARBI App - why do you think it's important for Bristolians to shop locally and support independent businesses?

A world of just Amazon, Tesco, Lidl & Starbucks sounds a bit boring doesn't it? Independents are culture and their value cannot be underestimated. The BARBI app is essential for independents like us to survive. To work with a company that actually cares about your businesses wellbeing and not just numbers is so refreshing, the current large food delivery apps are taking such a large percentage it's hard for any small business to make a profit.

It's so important for people to shop independently and support local brands to ensure that the share of wealth locally gets distributed fairly and not to all the big business shareholders. Independents also help preserve the culture of the community, especially in a city like Bristol where community is so valued.
