Funds will be put towards innovative online cancer support during the pandemic.

Penny Brohn UK have received a £50,000 emergency grant from breast cancer charity Walk the Walk, allowing them to continue to offer "game-changing" online support for people living with cancer during the coronavirus crisis.

After the initial outbreak earlier this year, Penny Brohn quickly made the switch to providing a range of online services, caring for cancer sufferers who have been unable to access in-person support.

The grant will enable the Bristol-based charity to operate and expand online for at least another six months, a vital boost as they continue to work under exceptionally difficult circumstances.

Penny Brohn's virtual group sessions and one-to-one appointments with doctors, counsellors and therapists have already made a huge difference during the pandemic, reaching people in need across Bristol and the rest of the UK.

One participant, based in Derbyshire, has described Penny Brohn's online programme as a "game-changer", having previously found it difficult to access the charity's services in person due to travel limitations.

"I am full of gratitude. Penny Brohn has continued to be my anchor," they said.

Despite COVID restrictions forcing the team to cancel almost all of their fundraising events, putting a huge strain on their finances, Penny Brohn have been as passionate as ever in supporting people's mental health and wellbeing in 2020.

The support from Walk the Walk, organised as part of a nationwide project providing emergency grants to frontline cancer charities, is a hugely positive step as Penny Brohn continue their tireless work throughout the autumn/winter period.

Speaking on the allocation of the Walk the Walk grant, Penny Brohn's newly-appointed CEO, Julie Worrall, said: “The support of Walk the Walk has been transformational to Penny Brohn UK.

"It is a special relationship that has enabled Penny Brohn UK to be the charity it is today.  This year has been particularly hard for us all and we are truly grateful to Nina and the Trustees for their grant towards our online services.

"With their help, we are able to reach people with cancer beyond geographical boundaries; helping them to feel less alone and more connected during this most challenging of times.”

With more than 40 years' experience, Penny Brohn UK recognises that people with cancer need more than medicine. Their whole-person approach offers personalised care from the point of diagnosis into treatment and throughout survivorship.

Penny Brohn's partnership with Walk the Walk spans over 20 years, with more than £21 million donated to date. For more information on Penny Brohn, or to find out how you can support their work, head to their website.
