Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2020 exhibition open at M Shed

Posted on: 22 Oct 2020

The annual showcase is back for 2020 with another stunning collection of wildlife photography.

The M Shed team have officially launched this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, with a striking collection of images selected from almost 50,000 entries from photographers around the world.

Featuring perching primates, frolicking foxes, remarkable reptiles and much more, the return of Wildlife Photographer of the Year covers intriguing animal behaviour, extraordinary habitats and, of course, challenging depictions of today's environmental crisis.

Packed once again with an array of awe-inspiring shots of the natural world, the exhibition will be open daily at the M Shed until Monday 3 May 2021.

Now in its 56th year, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition uses the unique power of photography to tell stories, spark conversation and inspire curiosity in the natural world.

This year's competition attracted more than 49,000 entries from around the world - a huge rise from the 361 entrants in its maiden year, 1965.

Images are selected for the exhibition by a panel of international experts, and winning entries are recognised for their creativity, originality and technical excellence.

Having been showcasing the world's most astonishing natural photography for more than fifty years, the Wildlife Photography of the Year showcase offers visitors the rare chance to get up close and personal with a huge selection of animals, from staggering sealife to incredible insects.

Russian photographer Sergey Gorshkov picked up this year's Grand Title with an intimate shot of a Siberian tiger appearing to hug an ancient Manchurian fir tree as she marks it with her scent.

The Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award was won by Liina Heikkinen in Finland, with her photo of a young red fox fiercely defending the remains of a barnacle goose from its five young siblings.

Both winning images, as well as an array of commended entries, can be seen at the M Shed's Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2020 exhibition, running until Monday 3 May 2021.

Entry is priced at £6 for adults and £5 for concessions, with a 50% discount available for National Art Pass holders and students with a valid ID. Under-16s can attend free of charge, but still require a ticket. Book your visit here.

Amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis, and to minimise risk of transmission, M Shed visitors will be required to register with the NHS Track & Trace service upon entry, and wear face coverings for the duration of their time inside the museum.
