Bristol Rovers 2020/21 League One fixtures revealed

Posted on: 21 Aug 2020

Ben Garner's side will kick off their 2020/21 campaign with a trip to Sunderland in September.

A full fixture list has been revealed for the upcoming 2020/21 EFL League One season, with Bristol Rovers preparing for a busy season as the league caters for a delayed start.

Amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis and the delayed finish of the 2019/20 campaign, this season will kick off a few weeks later than usual, but is still scheduled to end, as normal, in early May.

For that reason, clubs across the football league are preparing for jam-packed calendars, with less recovery time between matches as league bosses look to return to normal as quickly as possible.

Fixtures are due to be played behind closed doors for the foreseeable future, as coronavirus restrictions continue to prevent the safe return of large-scale gatherings.

Following the postponement of last season's League One as a result of the coronavirus lockdown, Bristol Rovers' 14th-placed finish was decided on a points-per-game basis.

Manager Ben Garner will certainly be looking for improvement this time around, although The Gas face some tricky opponents in the opening weeks of the upcoming campaign.

Rovers' 2019/20 League One season kicks off with a trip to Sunderland on Saturday 12 September, as the Black Cats will surely be looking for a strong start as they aim to bounce back up to the Championship at the third time of asking.

From there, The Gas face tough fixtures against Ipswich Town (H, Saturday 19 September), Doncaster Rovers (A, Saturday 26 September) and newly-promoted Northampton Town (H, Saturday 3 October).

An unprecedented run of league matches in October will see Rovers play seven times in a month, with four away trips during that time to Lincoln City (Saturday 10), Shrewsbury Town (Tuesday 20), Accrington Stanley (Saturday 24) and Rochdale (Saturday 31).

Rovers have played a string of pre-season friendlies during the summer as they look to maintain match fitness during the coronavirus outbreak, comfortably seeing off local sides Yate Town and Bath City and narrowly beating newly-promoted League One rivals Plymouth Argyle.

Rovers have been busy in the transfer window so far, re-signing Derby winger Jayden Mitchell-Lawson on a season-long loan, as well as securing permanent deals for midfielders Sam Nicholson, Josh Grant and Zain Westbrooke, striker Jonah Ayunga, and defenders Max Ehmer and Jack Baldwin.

Looking to improve on a mid-table finish last time out, The Gas will be hoping to bring in a few more players before transfer deadline day on Monday 5 October.
