Bristol City 2020/21 Championship fixtures revealed

Posted on: 21 Aug 2020

The Robins are preparing for their first full season under new head coach Dean Holden.

A full fixture list has been revealed for the 2020/21 EFL Championship season, with the Bristol City squad back in training ahead of the start of a new campaign.

Due to coronavirus-related disruption, this season's footballing calendar is shaping up to be one of the most demanding in the modern era.

The UK lockdown and subsequent suspension of league football from March-June this year led to a late finish to the 2019/20 season, meaning there will be less recovery time between matches in 2020/21 as the league looks to make up for lost time.

Matches are due to be played behind closed doors for the foreseeable future, as coronavirus restrictions continue to prevent the safe return of large-scale gatherings.

As newly-appointed head coach Dean Holden prepares for his first full season in charge, the City squad and backroom staff will be hoping for a strong start to a campaign, following a disappointing end to last season that saw The Robins miss out on the playoff places.

City's Championship campaign kicks off with a home match against newly-promoted Coventry City on Saturday 12 September, before fixtures against Stoke City (A, Saturday 19 September) and Sheffield Wednesday (H, Saturday 26 September).

The first challenge of an extraordinarily busy season could potentially be to compete in as many as seven matches in September alone, with the first four rounds of the Carabao Cup due to be played before the end of the month.

The Robins will welcome Exeter City to Ashton Gate in the first round on Saturday 5 September.

The grueling 2020/21 schedule continues throughout the rest of the calendar year, with a potential nine matches to play in December, including three league games in the space of a week during the buildup to Christmas.

Having come agonisingly close to the Premier League playoff places in recent years, and completely fallen apart when it mattered most in the closing stages of last season, Bristol City will be desperate to finally crack the top six this time around.

With this season's transfer window open until Monday 5 October, the board will be looking to bolster a squad that has recently lost club captain Bailey Wright as well as influential and long-serving midfielder Korey Smith.

Central midfielder Joe Williams recently became Dean Holden's first signing as Robins boss, and fans should expect to see one or two more new recruits before the deadline.

The 2020/21 EFL Championship playoffs are scheduled for late May, but it remains to be seen whether or not Bristol City will be in the running for a long-awaited shot at promotion to the Premier League.
