The Old Bookshop launch crowdfunding campaign to open new outdoor space

Posted on: 20 Aug 2020

The owners made the decision not to open when pubs got the go-ahead in July.

The team behind The Old Bookshop in Bedminster have launched a crowdfunding campaign ahead of a proposed reopening in September, following months of closure as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Old Bookshop Reopening Fund will look to raise money for the construction of a new outdoor seating space at the front of the pub, allowing the owners to maintain capacity levels while adhering to social distancing guidelines.

Given its small floor space, the pub's COVID-safe capacity is strictly limited, meaning that up until now, the owners have been unable to work out a viable way to reopen.

Having been granted permission from Bristol City Council to set up an outdoor seating area on North Street, the pub are now asking for donations to fund their new space, with just over £1000 of a £1500 target raised so far.

Opened in 2011, The Old Bookshop has emerged as a vital part of the Bedminster community and one of Bristol's best-loved pubs and small live venues.

Explaining their current situation on their crowdfunder page, the team have outlined the huge impact the coronavirus crisis has had on the business.

They took the decision not to reopen in early July along with pubs across Bristol and the rest of the UK, in the knowledge that social distancing guidelines would drastically affect their revenue.

Sharing the campaign across their social media channels, the pub said: "We have started a crowdfunder to help us reopen next month. We need money to build an outside area at the front of the pub so we don't have to reduce our capacity.

"If you can contribute in any way it will mean the world to us and enable us to carry on serving the fine people of Bristol."
