The Carnival team have unveiled the events schedule for the first-ever digital festival.

St Pauls Carnival CIC have revealed the lineup for Spirit Up! United at Home, the first-ever digital edition of the carnival due to take place from Saturday 20 June until Friday 3 July.

With the full Carnival postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, organisers have enlisted some of Bristol's most exciting artists, musicians, poets and creatives to take part in a fringe-style event celebrating Afro-Caribbean history and culture.

Spirit Up! United at Home 2020.

Kicking off with an exclusive live set from acclaimed reggae singer-songwriter Da Fuchaman this Saturday (20 June), Spirit Up! is set to showcase an eclectic mix of poetry, music, spoken word, craft, film and more over the next two weeks.

Alongside Carnival Mask Making (Friday 26 June), a Carnival-inspired workout class (Tuesday 30 June) and Carnival Headdress Making (Wednesday 1 July), expect uplifting musical programming courtesy of The Windrush Suite (Monday 22 June) and Ngaio's Booty Bass Party on Friday 3 July.

Ujima Radio will, as usual, be playing a big part in this year's digital Carnival, hosting an all-day Takeover from midday on Sunday 28 June.

Roger Griffith and University of Bristol historian and academic Olivette Otele will discuss the origins and significance of the annual event during a special two-hour show on the station, on Thursday 2 July.

Bristol film fans can catch an exclusive screening of Stuart Napier's short film, Carnival, shot on location at St Pauls Carnival 2018, and get involved as Black South West Network host an evening of short film screenings and panel discussions on Wednesday 1 July.

The programme for Spirit Up! United at Home will serve as a warmup for another huge celebration on Saturday 4 July, what would have been the day of the Carnival itself.

Details are yet to be confirmed with regards to the full Carnival Day lineup, so keep your eyes on the St Pauls Carnival Facebook page for news and updates.

With the livelihoods of artists and independent creators across the city affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, St Pauls Carnival is committed to supporting the arts community as much as possible through this year's event.

The St Pauls Carnival CIC has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support the artists involved this year and safeguard the Carnival for the future. Those who donate £20 or more will receive a Carnival wristband and t-shirt - find out more and donate here.
