Tickets remaining for Bristol Rovers' midweek clash with Sunderland

Posted on: 09 Mar 2020

There's a big three points up for grabs as Rovers look to distance themselves from the bottom clubs in League One.

A poor run of form has seen Bristol Rovers slip back into the bottom half of the league in recent wins, with three consecutive defeats taking them down to 15th.

They welcome promotion-chasing Sunderland to the Memorial Stadium this Tuesday 10 March in the hope of breaking the duck and establishing some breathing space above the sides battling relegation.

At the turn of the year, we wrote a piece looking at the challenge facing then-newly-appointed manager Ben Garner and his Bristol Rovers side. Struggling for form, we wondered if a decent run of results could propel them up towards the play-off places.

However, The Gas have struggled to find their feet in 2020, failing to find any consistency and languishing in mid-table and the bottom half. Goals have been hard to come by - at the time of writing that original article, second-top scorer Tyler Smith had scored just five goals. Just short of two months later, he hasn't been able to add to his return.

Visitors Sunderland's struggles have been well-documented, once a dead-cert for an instant return to The Championship but now a troubled club desperate to return to their former place in the top leagues. Despite their issues, though, they sit fifth in the league, just three points off an automatic promotion place.

A win on Tuesday night wouldn't mean a whole lot for Rovers' season, but it would be a big scalp and a timely three points following another miserable run of results. You'll often find some of the best atmospheres under the floodlights at Tuesday nights matches, and The Memorial crowd should be right up for this one.
