Cuban multi-instrumentalist Roberto Fonseca confirmed to play Fiddlers in May

The prolific artist will be playing in Bristol as part of an extensive 2019/20 world tour.

Born and bred in the Cuban capital, Roberto Fonseca is often referred to as Havana's Herbie Hancock. A born musician and accomplished pianist, composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, producer and bandleader, he'll be performing an exclusive live show at Fiddlers on Sunday 10 May.

Roberto Fonseca.

Having released nine full-length studio albums, toured the world several times over and been nominated for an array of awards internationally, Fonseca is rightly regarded as one of Cuba's all-time great artists.

His professional career, which began in the early 1990s, has transcended jazz, funk and soul, hip-hop, R&B, classical, reggaeton, electronica and much more. His Cuban roots, of course, run deep through his sound, too, bursting with vibrant Caribbean flair.

"Wherever people are," he says, "I want them to hear my music and say 'this is Roberto Fonseca'."

Fonseca, as part of his trio that also includes drummer Ruly Herrera and veteran double bass player Yandy Martinez, released his 12th studio album in October 2019. Featuring the likes of saxophonist Joe Lovano and renowned trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, Yesun is arguably Fonseca's most ambitious album to date.

2019 also saw Fonseca receive the prestigious Ordre des Arts Letters from the French Ministry of Culture. Speaking on his goals after being awarded the honour, he said “I’m always trying to be a better musician, so wherever I am, I’m practising and composing, composing and practising. I like experimenting, breaking new ground.”

Tickets for Roberto Fonseca live at Fiddlers on Sunday 10 May are on sale now and can be found here. For more information or to find out what else is coming up at Fiddlers in 2020, head to their website.
