The gigs you need to see this October
Posted on: 02 Oct 2019We think – believe, in fact – that Bristol has the best music scene in the whole of the South West. But who wouldn’t? Just take a look at October’s gig schedule.
Pop-folk, punk and afrobeat: it’s a month of incredible gigs happening across the city. But don’t spend hours trawling through those listings – we’ve done the work for you. Here’s the gigs we think you should be spending your hard-earned cash on this October.

Indie punk revived: Brighton trio Gender Roles are to headline this Rough Trade showcase of young bands. And for Bristol music fans: don’t miss local outfit Grandma’s House with their riotgrrl punk.

Bess Atwell @ The Louisiana | Saturday 12 October
The Guardian, The Independent and more have raved about Bess Atwell – and with good reason. Armed with some cool folk-pop, she dropped out of uni to pursue music.
Pizzagirl @ Rough Trade | Monday 14 October
Glossy bedroom pop is the order of the day with Liverpool’s Pizzagirl. Retro, a bit ironic and loads of synth.
Rozi Plain @ Thekla | Friday 18 October
Alt-folk musician Rozi Plain creates intricate, off-kilter melodies with her electro-acoustic learnings. Reminiscent (and backed by) the likes of This Is The Kit, she’s been making music since 2008.

Who Are You? x The Rhythm Method & Lynks Afrikka @ The Exchange | Friday 18 October
A night hosted by local music blog WAX Music and DIY mag So Young, this Friday night soiree welcomes London duo The Rhythm Method. The real star of the show? It’s got to be Lynks Afrikka; an unapologetically queer performer combining drag, theatre and sound.
Thyla @ The Lousiana | 18 October
Last one for 18 October – we promise! Brighton post-punks Thyla will be stopping off in Bristol on their U.K. tour.
Waldo’s Gift @ The Gallimaufry, Wednesday 23 October

Turnover @ Anson Rooms | Friday 25 October
It’s a big one: Virginian dream/punk-pop outfit Turnover will play in Clifton at the end of the month. Evolving from their pop-punk of 2012, the band is now working on breezy melodies and ethereal guitars: it’s one way to brighten up the autumn nights.
MUSH @ Crofters Rights | Sunday 27 October
In many ways, Leeds is a lot like Bristol – its music scene included. So, why not meet Leeds art-rock outfit MUSH to see off October?
