It was a great night, with the band giving a thankful thriving response to Bristol. I thoroughly enjoyed this band, especially as they finished off with The Black Crowes number Wiser Time. I rate this band 5 stars and definitely worth seeing.
The Magpie Salute / Maker The Fiddlers, Bedminster 1 / 12 / 2018
As we arrived at Bedminster’s hidden gem - The Fiddlers, it was instantly obvious how ready the crowd were for this gig. The place was absolutely heaving with a mixed crowd of all ages, and there were still people outside on the wet pavement desperately trying to find a way into this sold out show. The atmosphere was heavy with anticipation, yet still uplifting and jolly with attendees happily sharing stories of their past experiences seeing the legendary band members of The Magpie Salute.
First onstage were support act Maker. I’d previously read that this four piece from Kent were known for their sixties inspired soulful blues rock and electrifying live performances, and they did not disappoint! Alongside stomping riffs, lead singer Alessandro Marinelli’s incredible vocals had the crowd enchanted from the first chorus. The band itself is definitely worth following. They had an incredible soulful sound with a pleasing image. The venue was warmed up and ready to welcome of The Magpie Salute.
This will be the third time I’ve seen Rich Robinson. Being a massive Black Crowes fan, the sound of the guitars kicking in was heart warming. The band kicked off with High Water, which was perfect. The crowd enjoyed the introduction, after which the band played Walk on Water, Take It All, and For The Wind. These were performed perfectly, great examples of how tight this band are to see live.
John Hogg was very energetic and showed the crowd that he was very down to earth. Fronting a band which originally played only Black Crowes covers as a lead man he demonstrated his own unique sound which went down a treat with the crowd. The band kicked in to What Goes On, Oh! Sweet Nuthin'. Followed by an amazing mix of covers, for example - The Velvet Underground - what a classic band to cover!
The space became a little tight as the crowds surged forward. I enjoyed the fact that the band changed spots to play their individual tracks. I was impressed when Rich played Yesterday I saw you, then kicked into an acoustic set. Onwards to The Black Crowes covers, which I’ve been excited to see - She Gave Good Sunflower, Good Morning Captain, and Horsehead. All of which were very welcome to the crowd towards the end. It was a great night, with the band giving a thankful thriving response to Bristol. I thoroughly enjoyed this band, especially as they finished off with The Black Crowes number Wiser Time.
