Bristol City FC announce eagerly anticipated pre-season friendly

Posted on: 09 May 2024

The Robins have today announced the first of their summer friendlies, which will see them welcoming Willem II to Ashton Gate, a club the fans share a special relationship with.

Bristol City will take on Willem II at Ashton Gate on Saturday 3 August 2024.

Robins fans have had a close connection to those of Willem II since the mid-2000s and have been clamouring for a friendly between the two sides for years, Now, with the Dutch side having just secured promotion to the Eredivisie, the club hierarchy have listened!

Since this link was established, City fans regularly take a trip to Tilburg, home of Willem II, to watch the team and, in return, Dutch supporters can often be seen (and heard) in the stands at Ashton Gate, helping to grow a bond between the two sets of supporters.

The friendly comes at an exciting time for Willem II, who earlier this week secured their promotion back to the Eredivisie after two years away, following a dramatic evening in the Keueken Kampioen Divisie. This means that the friendly in BS3 will be a key part of the preparation for Peter Maes’ side’s top division campaign.

Liam Manning’s side, however, will be dreaming of a 2024/25 campaign to match Willem’s 2023/24 as he looks ahead to his first pre-season as City head coach. The jury is still out on the former Oxford United gaffer with a mixed bag of results eventually ending in a largely positive run-in.

With the Championship season now over bar the playoffs, attentions will now turn to the summer with both the transfer window and pre-season sure to throw up plenty of intriguing sub-plots going into next season.

Bristol City will take on Willem II at Ashton Gate on Saturday 3 August 2024 with ticket details set to be released in the near future. Head to the Bristol City website for updates.
