St. Marks Road’s Grand Iftar returns this Sunday – in solidarity with Palestine

The community of St Marks Road are once again celebrating Ramadan this Sunday with their street-wide Grand Iftar – this time in special solidarity with Palestine.

Iftar is a community breaking of the Ramadan fast. Completed at Maghrib (sunset) prayer, the event is an important religious observance – but also a shared community space.

This community spirit is only further extended on Easton’s St Mark’s Road, as every year they host the Grand Iftar – a coming together of the Muslim community to break fast, pray and, this year, show solidarity with the suffering of the people of Palestine.

St Marks Road is one of the main centres of Easton’s community – winner of The Greatest Street in the Country Award from The Academy of Urbanism for 2020/21, it’s home to some iconic Bristol businesses and organisations. From the top-quality ingredients and deli counter of Bristol Sweet Mart, to local favourite pub The Sugarloaf, and greener-than-green restaurant The Garden of Easton, it’s a vibrant community of tight-knit business owners and community leaders.

St Marks Road is also home to Easton Jamia Masjid – a large and beautiful mosque that’s the heart of a thriving Muslim community, and the heart of the Grand Iftar!

As mentioned, this year’s Grand Iftar, taking place on Sunday 7 April, is expressly in support of the people of Palestine – members of the community are asked to fast to experience pangs of hunger in solidarity with the people of Gaza, and to break their fasts in the name of the suffering people of Palestine. Special prayers and messages of peace and solidarity will also be offered on the day in the same spirit.

The fast for the day begins at 4:46am, and the community are invited to gather from 19:00, with the breaking of fast happening at 19:55. Visitors are welcome to bring their own food to break their fast, but there will also be water, fruit, dates and vegetable biriyani served.

As mentioned, the Grand Iftar is this Sunday, 7 April, and begins at 19:00, with the breaking of fast happening from 19:55.
