A Bristol mum of two and entrepreneur is speaking out in favour of the Love Bristol giftcard – encouraging mums to think of themselves as ‘more than a mum’ this Mother’s Day, supporting local businesses at the same time.

Kate Spence Duod is the co-owner of Afro Street in the Arcade Bristol, Broadmead – an Afrocentric lifestyle & fashion boutique platforming and championing Black-owned business.

Kate's journey from working in couture with Jimmy Choo to launching her bespoke shoe brand reflects the evolution of Afro Street. Focusing on quality and uniqueness, Afro Street serves as a platform for black-owned, African, and Caribbean-inspired businesses. In 2024, Afro Street is expanding its community engagement by opening its basement as a boutique lounge for creatives.

In a display of commendable bravery & honesty, Kate spoke out on the challenges of balancing parenting and running your own business: “Like many mums, I’m juggling a business with children, and trying to do well at all of it. You worry about sacrificing time with your children. I think it’s about finding a new rhythm, and that’s why working with Danny is good because we both have different skill sets that complement each other.”

As part of the Love Bristol Gift Card initiative, Afro Street is among the 170 local businesses encouraging people to shop locally. A survey by Town & City Gift Cards reveals that 77% of mothers feel guilty spending on themselves. With 92% of mums wishing for more personal time, the Love Bristol Gift Card becomes a meaningful Mother's Day gift, allowing them to indulge in beauty treatments, a meal out, or other local delights.

Kate, a mother herself, recognizes the importance of supporting local businesses, saying: “I think it’s so important to support local because if we don’t, the businesses we love won’t be there anymore. Independent retailers are fighting really hard right now. By supporting local, you’re supporting your next door neighbour and giving back to your local community.”
