Based on the novel by David Nicholls and the HBO/Playtone film starring James McAvoy, Rebecca Hall, Benedict Cumberbatch and more; Starter For Ten features an irresistible original soundtrack inspired by the wild student scene of the 1980s with themes of love, belonging and the all-important difference between knowledge and wisdom.

What is eighteen-year-old Brian Jackson’s proudest achievement in his life so far? His A-level results. His idol? Kate Bush. His lifelong dream? To take part in the legendary TV quiz show University Challenge.

The scene is set in 1985 as Brian leaves his home in Southend to begin his first year at Bristol University, he soon discovers that falling in love and growing up take a lot more than just general knowledge.

Adapted from the hilarious novel from bestselling author David Nicholls and the star-studded rom-com movie, this is a bright and big-hearted musical with a book and lyrics from Emma Hall and Charlie Parham – who also directs. It also boasts a wonderful 80s-inspired score and lyrics by Hatty Carman and Tom Rasmussen.

Starter For Ten stars Adam Bregman (Sing Street, Huntington Theatre) as lovesick Essex boy, Brian; Mel Giedroyc (Company, Gielgud) as his mum Irene; Emily Lane as Brian’s unrequited crush Alice (Frozen, Theatre Royal Drury Lane); and Robert Portal (The 39 Steps, West End) as renowned quizmaster, Bamber Gascoigne.
