A thrilling and radical take on Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis from legendary poet Lemn Sissay OBE in collaboration and physical theatre company Frantic Assembly opened at the UK's longest continuously running theatre last night.

Kafka’s Metamorphosis runs at Bristol Old Vic until Saturday 20 January 2024.

One morning like any other, Gregor Samsa wakes up to find himself changed. To those close to him, Gregor is dangerous, untouchable, and vermin – even worse than that, he is a burden. Experience the terrifying, mind-altering world of Franz Kafka’s most celebrated work as you never have before!

A word said, an action out of place, the opening of old wounds, none of which can be undone. Up until now, Gregor Samsa has woken up each morning, caught the same train, and worked hard to pay off his family's debt, however, that world changes beyond all conception following this brutal metamorphosis.

In their first new commission in five years, Frantic Assembly and Lemn Sissay OBE have collaborated on this gripping new adaptation of Metamorphosis: combining the fluidity and lyricism of Sissay’s words with Frantic’s uncompromising physicality.

This rousing new production promises to be a rousing adaptation of Kafka’s uncanny tale of cruelty and kindness; a visceral depiction of the struggle to operate within a system that crushes you beneath its heel.

Formed 25 years ago, Frantic Assembly is one of the UK’s best-loved companies thanks to its brave and bold approach and dynamic physicality. Lemn Sissay MBE is a BAFTA-nominated international prize-winning writer; a literary powerhouse recognised all over the world.

Those wishing to find out more about the adaptation will be able to attend a stage talk featuring Lemn Sissay MBE in conversation with Bristol Old Vic’s Artistic Director Nancy Medina on Monday 15 January.
