Born in London in 1932, Raymond Briggs studied at Wimbledon School of Art before working briefly in advertising. He soon began to win acclaim as a children’s book illustrator, particularly for his work on a 1966 book of nursery rhymes, The Mother Goose Treasury.

Briggs quickly became a wildly popular figure in children’s literature, penning his own hugely successful strip illustration books Father Christmas (1973) and The Snowman (1978) – both of which led to popular on-screen adaptations. His other acclaimed works include Ethel & Ernest, Fungus the Bogeyman and nuclear war satire When The Wind Blows.

Thursday’s ‘Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas in Concert’ event will begin with performances of Julia Donaldson’s The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child, both for narrator and orchestra. Each character in the tales will be represented by a different instrument in the orchestra – guess which one the Gruffalo will be?

Presented by the exciting contemporary ensemble Mozart Symphony Orchestra, this concert is sure to prove the perfect antidote to panto and a wonderful Christmas treat for all the family!
