Posted on: 24 Nov 2023

Much loved on-the-water music venue Thekla has been nominated Grassroots Champion of the Year at the National Music Industry LIVE Awards 2023 and Dot To Dot Festival is up for Best Metropolitan Festival.

Both the beloved music venues and the city’s multi-venue music festival (which also takes over Nottingham for a day) are run by DHP Family, a national promoter who are themselves up for awards. Winners of these awards will be announced on Tuesday 5 December.

Next year, Thekla will be celebrating its 40th anniversary of wowing Bristolian music crowds. Restored following it was pulled from half submergence in 1982, the converted venue is fiercely independent and one of the country’s most exciting live spaces – with a constant finger on the pulse of Bristol’s burgeoning music scene.

Always boasting a diverse programme of live music, Thekla has seen shows from the likes of Pulp in the 1980s, 90s Bristol legends such as Massive Attack, Portishead and Roni Size and many more brilliant artists, massive names in drum and bass throughout the late 90s and early 2000s and many more brilliant acts.

Thekla has maintained this reputation for platforming the UK’s biggest stars to this day, 2023 has seen exciting new acts such as Biig Piig, Black Honey, Do Nothing, Bdrmm, Grove, Benefits and more with hotly anticipated upcoming shows including Steve Mason, Ruts DC, A. Savage, Beans On Toast, Pria Ragu and more.

This year’s Dot to Dot Festival proved another raging success with the Bristol leg selling out in recording time thanks to a headline slot from Mercury nominees Yard Act, high profile appearances from the likes of Alvvays, Murder Capital, Opus Kink and more as well as a sparkling undercard of UK music talent.

Spread across Bristol venues including Thekla, Rough Trade, The Louisiana, The Fleece, Exchange, O2 Academy Bristol, SWX, Dareshack and The Crown. As well as bringing some of indie’s most sought-after acts to the city for a full day of music, Dot to Dot gives audiences the chance to discover the next generation of Bristol artists.

Set up to recognise excellence in the live music industry, the LIVE Awards select the best in class for the final shortlist with entries judged by a panel of industry professionals. Awards will be presented on 12 December in London, in front of an invited audience.

Winners will be announced on 5 December 2023 – find out more here.
