Bristol family to run and cycle more than 100km for Great Western Air Ambulance

Marie King and her family are taking part in two sponsored challenges to raise money for the Great Western Air Ambulance service.

Bristol local Marie King has launched a fundraiser for a huge sponsored challenge that will see her and her family run and cycle a total distance of almost 150km for charity this summer.

Made up of Marie, her husband James, eight-year-old daughter Katie and close friends Tony and Brad, the team will be running the Pen y Fan Brecon Beacons on Friday 26 June, before embarking on a 136km bike ride from Bristol to Weymouth on Saturday 8 August.

The family were inspired to raise vital funds for the Great Western Air Ambulance after the service effectively saved James' life following a severe head injury.

"Great Western Air Ambulance got to James so fast, and put him in an induced coma before taking him to hospital by air," Marie explains on her JustGiving page. "Without the service, we're certain he wouldn't be here with us now."

Covering Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, Bristol, Bath and North Somerset, the Great Western Air Ambulance provides critical care to more than 2.1 million people.

The service is propped up by donations, with annual running costs estimated at around £3m. The team, made up of a pilot, a critical care doctor and a critical care paramedic, attend an average of five incidents every day.

Having already reached the halfway point of their fundraising, surpassing £500 of a £1,000 target, Marie and her family are working hard to spread the word and offer as much support as they can to a vital emergency service.
